The Kamigamo shrine is dedicated to a kami of thunder. These two mounds of sand at Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto are supposedly arranged to indicate that the kami they represent descended to the ground in the form of thunder. I confess that is one leap too far for me, as I associate thunder with sound.
