Sanmon at Chion-in Temple

Sanmon at Chion-in Temple

Looking east across the street at the Sanmon of Chion-in temple. The Sanmon was built in 1619 and is the largest such gate still remaining in Japan. This particular gate has appeared in several films and dramas, partly due to it being the largest and its good upkeep, but also due to the very long and steep staircase directly behind it that one must ascend to reach the other temple buildings. Before digital compositing was used as a matter of course, the standalone nature of the gate made it easy for film editors to take footage from here and pretend it was from somewhere else.
