Pinnacles of karst rock thrust up through the ground on the Akiyoshi plateau in Yamaguchi prefecture. There are also many sinkholes which make the landscape treacherous. The lack of forest is intentional: for the appropriately named Festival of the Wildfire (Nobi-no-Saiten), the grasslands on the plains are set on fire on the third Sunday of each February to preserve the stark landscape.
